Membership Committee Hosts Street Captains
A meeting of the street captains was held October 2, 2007. Approximately twenty six (26) of the thirty nine (39) street captains were in attendance. The meeting agenda included safety in the neighborhood and foreclosure prevention awareness.
Officer Gerald Jankowski of the Shaker Heights Police Department (SHPD) Crime Prevention Unit made a captivating and informative presentation. Items covered included: recommended door and window locks (Lock types recommended were demonstrated); outdoor lighting, shrubbery, antitheft procedures for garage storage items (bicycles, equipment, etc.); securing your home while on vacation, and security systems. Officer Jankowski also discussed the use of property identification numbers. Officer Jankowski also offered to make home inspections. He emphasized the need for residents to report any suspicious behavior, vehicles, etc in the neighborhood. Handouts were provided (available from SHPD upon request). .
The question and answer topics included: neighborhood police assignments. sexual predators in the Lomond community, idle youth and the possibility of productive youth activities, overnight parking on the street, the make up of the Police Blotter, responsibilities of absentee landlords and others.
After approximately one and one-half hours of presentation and questions, the street captains continued to express their interest in information to facilitate safety in the Lomond area. With the promise to have Officer Jankowski return in the near future we were able to move to the next agenda item.
The Foreclosure Prevention Committee made a presentation which included a tape of a prior meeting with County Recorder, Jim Rokakis. It is hoped that this overview will enable the street captains to provide information to residents seeking help and/or discuss the subject of foreclosures at block meetings. The committee has agreed to make a copy of the tape available upon request.
The street captains were encouraged to think about activities for their given streets. They were referred to the plans outlined in Vision 2012 for guidance.
Based on the obvious interest and atmosphere, the meeting could have lasted another hour. WELL……..NEXT TIME. THANK YOU STREET CAPTAINS FOR YOUR ENTHUSIASM AND SUPPORT.
